The Energy Community of Eastern Bohemia (ESVČ) can now welcome electricity producers and consumers from across the Czech Republic. The change follows an update to the rules for community energy and is reflected in an amendment to the community’s statutes approved by the Pardubice Region Assembly on 22 September. Previously, membership was limited to entities in the Pardubice, Chrudim and Vysoké Mýto areas.

ESVČ is already sharing electricity in practice. Its first members began sharing surplus electricity from renewable sources in May, including electricity generated at the long-term care facility in Rybitví and used by Pardubice Hospital. More generation and consumption sites are being added.

The new conditions create opportunities for cooperation with municipalities, institutions and private organisations. The amendment also allows an external renewable energy source to join the sharing group serving the Pardubice Region’s energy system, subject to approval by the Regional Council.

The Energy and Water Innovation Cluster (EWIC) helped prepare and coordinate the ESVČ project, including its technical, economic and legal framework. The wider membership rules mark another step in the community’s development and in making effective use of electricity from renewable sources.
